It’s welcome news for the airline, which had a false start to the route’s return in March last year, following a pause between the two cities on 27 March in 2023, due to global economic challenges.
The Brisbane-Kuala Lumpur route will operate five times a week aboard an A330-300 aircraft, offering Queensland travellers connectivity across Southeast Asia and Europe, as well as another key gateway to India through the airline’s network of 10 major Indian cities.
It’s been a busy year for Malaysia Airlines. Earlier this year, the airline announced that it would ramp up frequencies between Kuala Lumpur and Australia and by Jan next year, new flights would be served on the new A330neos.
The first cabs off the rank were Melbourne and Sydney, followed by Perth and Adelaide.
“We will have one of the youngest fleets, if not the youngest international fleet flying in and out of Australia,” revealed Head of Commercial Sales, Western Region for Malaysia Airlines, Wayne Borland, at the time.
Then in September, Malaysia Airlines and Qantas announced its expanded codeshare agreement to deliver greater connectivity and benefits across Australia, Malaysia and key international gateways.
Here, the airline’s Chief Commercial Officer Dersenish Aresandiran chats with travelBulletin about the airline’s renewed focus on the Australian market and what the A330neo offers travellers.
What is driving Malaysia Airlines’ renewed focus and capacity growth across the Australian market, particularly with the resumption of Brisbane flights?
Australia has always been one of our strongest international markets, with a robust customer base of leisure, business and those visiting friends and family. With travel demand continuing to rise in this region, we are expanding our network across Australia to offer greater connectivity, efficiency and comfort. Ultimately, we want to become the preferred full-service carrier between Australasia, Asia and beyond. The resumption of Brisbane flights, the increased frequencies across key routes and the introduction of the A330neo aircraft will be key enablers of this growth and delivering on our long-term vision.
How does Australia fit into Malaysia Airlines’ broader international growth strategy moving forward?
This region is central to our long-term strategy of strengthening Kuala Lumpur’s position as a premium hub and gateway linking Australasia to Asia and beyond.
As one of our largest international markets, Australia represents significant potential. Australian travellers value efficient connectivity, not just to Malaysia, but onwards to destinations across Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Europe. With Kuala Lumpur serving as an ideal gateway to these regions, this market offers a vital opportunity to further strengthen this positioning.
We hope to see significant growth in the region over the next few years, supported by increased capacity, stronger partnerships and renewed brand visibility.
Our recent network increases mark the largest expansion of capacity by Malaysia Airlines in this region in its history, underscoring our investment and reaffirming our long-term commitment to this region.
What advantages does the A330neo bring to travellers?
The introduction of the A330neo aircraft represents the next generation of travel for Malaysia Airlines, combining advanced technology, comfort, and environmental responsibility. Passengers can expect all-aisle Business Class seats with privacy doors, enhanced Economy Class seating with award-winning Recaro R3 seats ergonomically designed for comfort, improved air circulation, complimentary high-speed wi-fi featuring unlimited data for all passengers, 4K entertainment, and quieter cabins.
The arrival of the A330neo aircraft really underpins our growth strategy and reinforces our commitment to strengthening our presence in the region. The aircraft delivers meaningful advancements in capacity, sustainability, and route development, enabling us to optimise seating, increase frequencies, and enhance connectivity between Australia and Kuala Lumpur.
As we receive more A330neo aircraft, we are planning to progressively deploy them across our Australia network with all routes except Perth, which will transition slightly later, expected to be fully operated by the A330neo by the end of the first half of 2026, subject to the final delivery schedule.
How do newer aircraft like the A330neo contribute to Malaysia Airlines’ sustainability goals?
The A330neo delivers up to 25% better fuel efficiency which ultimately helps to reduce our environmental footprint of long-haul operations. At Malaysia Airlines, we recognise our responsibility to minimise our environmental impact, which is why sustainability is one of our key operational focuses. This new aircraft takes us one step closer to achieving our broader Sustainable Tomorrow initiative, which places sustainable practices at the core of what we do.
Looking ahead, what are the key growth priorities for Malaysia Airlines across the ANZ region over the next 12 months?
Our immediate priority is to ensure a successful resumption of Brisbane services while sustaining the increased frequencies across Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Auckland. We are focused on maximising connectivity and efficiency, while maintaining our high service standards our customers expect – a goal we are confident of achieving with the support of our modern fleet.
We also aim to continue strengthening strategic partnerships and tourism collaborations. Initiatives like our recent codeshare partnership with Qantas and our Memorandum of Understanding with Brisbane Airport and Tourism and Events Queensland to promote Queensland represent our commitment to strengthening air connectivity and destination visibility.
We will continue to work closely with our valued tourism, trade and institutional partners at both the national and state levels, together with our airport and operational partners of which we have strong, long-standing relationships.
Any future growth will be guided by market demand, profitability and sustainability, ensuring that all expansions contribute strategically to the strength of our network and the Kuala Lumpur hub. While we are committed to growth in the region, we will pursue it responsibly, ensuring it strengthens our network and enhances the travel experience for our customers.
