Virgin is the full package

The new platform allows travellers to book flights and accommodation in one transaction, ADAM BISHOP and JANIE MEDBURY write.

Virgin Australia has announced a return to the holiday packaging market by reviving Virgin Australia Holidays, a brand originally launched in 2003 but later scrapped during the pandemic in 2020.

Relaunched in collaboration with online marketplace Hopper, the revamped platform offers VA customers the option of purchasing bundled flights and accommodation to select domestic and international destinations, including hotspots like Bali and Cairns.

VA said the move was motivated by market research which showed a rising number of travellers are seeking out value and convenience when booking.

Recent research by YouGov also suggested that 75% of travellers are more likely to book a holiday package through their preferred airline than via other channels.

Virgin Australia Holidays will also benefit Velocity Frequent Flyer members, who will enjoy added benefits when they book packages, earning up to 4.5 points per $1 spent plus status credits on eligible flights.

The decision represents an attempt to retain more customers within the VA ecosystem and capture more of the travel wallet, while at the same time taking on the might of the well-established Qantas Holidays brand.

“Virgin Australia Holidays marks an important step in expanding our offering beyond flights and into a more complete travel experience,” said chief marketing and COO Libby Minogue.

“We’re bringing together flights, accommodation and Velocity benefits in one seamless booking experience, delivering greater value and at a time when cost of living remains front-of-mind.”
