Virgin Australia shakes up Velocity membership

The airline has announced a major overhaul of its frequent flyer program to acknowledge its most loyal guests with 'Forever Gold' and 'Platinum Plus' tiers, JO-ANNE HUI-MILLER writes.

THE significant changes to Virgin Australia’s membership tiers are aimed at rewarding its most loyal flyers and making seat redemptions easier.

Acting in response to a member survey, Velocity will introduce a new ‘Forever Gold’ tier for loyal members to lock in their status for life and earn permanent access to perks such as lounge access, priority check-in, security screening and more.

Qualification for Forever Gold will come for members who have earned 12,000 status credits dating back to 01 Feb 2013, with a minimum of 9,000 from Virgin Australia marketed flights taken by the member specifically, excluding extras earned from family pooling, partner airlines, credit cards or shopping programs such as FlyBuys.

Ultra-frequent flyers will also be able to aim higher than the current tier ladder permits, with Velocity to launch a new Platinum Plus tier, which will allow holders to enjoy four FOC upgrades to business class when flying on a Flex or Choice fare.

Platinum Plus status will be granted to flyers who earn 2,000 status credits over a 12-month period, with at least 1,500 coming from VA operated flights. The same mark is required to be hit to maintain Platinum Plus for subsequent years.
