Two heavyweight names in the guided travel and expedition space are set to make unchartered forays into European river cruising, with Trafalgar and Lindblad Expeditions each unveiling plans to launch bespoke river cruise experiences from next year.
Trafalgar’s river cruise debut
Trafalgar, part of The Travel Corporation (TTC), will extend its renowned guided touring brand to the waterways of Europe for the first time. The brand has launched two itineraries now available for booking to travel advisors – an eight-day cruise along the Danube aboard the 128-passenger Trafalgar Reverie, and a ten-day Rhine itinerary on the similar-sized Trafalgar Verity.
Both vessels are scheduled to commence operations in spring 2026.
Trafalgar has not yet confirmed whether the vessels are being purpose-built or chartered, though both will reflect the company’s trademark approach to immersive travel. The cruises will include ‘Trafalgar Moments’ – signature experiences such as guided tours by local specialists, intimate ‘Be My Guest’ encounters with regional hosts, and at least one ‘Make Travel Matter’ activity designed to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The onboard experience promises a blend of cultural engagement and wellness, featuring regional entertainers, culinary demonstrations, and locally-inspired dining. Guests will also have access to onboard yoga, complimentary bicycles for shore excursions, and wellness options intended to balance enrichment with relaxation.
TTC Tour Brands Deputy CEO Melissa DaSilva said the company’s move into river cruising was a natural evolution.
“We’ve always been about making it easy for travellers to connect with the heart and soul of every destination,” she said.
“Now, we’re bringing that same philosophy and unmatched experience — valued by our travel agent partners – to Europe’s iconic rivers.”
Lindblad and Transcend Forge Strategic Partnership
Meanwhile, adventure travel pioneer Lindblad Expeditions is partnering with Transcend Cruises, a US-based company focused on group and corporate travel, to launch its own river cruise offering – also in 2026.
The collaboration will see Lindblad charter one of Transcend’s next-generation river vessels currently under construction, with a charter agreement running initially through 2028.
The ships – Transcend Connect and Transcend Evolve – are being built at the Den Breejen Shipyard in the Netherlands.
These 135-metre vessels will accommodate up to 120 guests and are being tailored specifically for immersive, small-group experiences. Each ship will feature 60 staterooms that can be converted into 30 larger suites, allowing for flexible configurations ideal for business events, corporate charters, and educational groups.
Designed to blend luxury with intellectual enrichment, the vessels will include a main restaurant, rear and upper-deck lounges, a double-deck theatre, and a rooftop sun deck with a swimming pool.
A standout feature is the three-storey wellness area, complete with spa facilities, two private treatment rooms, a sauna, and a Technogym-equipped fitness centre offering video-led yoga and exercise classes. Guests will also have access to 20 bicycles for independent exploration onshore.
Each Lindblad sailing will be led by an experienced expedition leader, supported by a team of field experts and at least one National Geographic representative. The cruises are designed to take guests “deeper and farther” into Europe’s riverside towns and cities, with private tours and exclusive events woven into each itinerary.
Lindblad CEO Natalya Leahy said the launch reflects a strong desire among guests for more meaningful exploration options.
“We know that how you see it matters, and that’s why we’ve curated these river voyages with the same depth, care, and expertise that define all of our expeditions,” she said.
“With National Geographic naturalists and historians, our guests will explore Europe’s storied rivers in truly meaningful ways.”
