Tassie, Uluru lose in VA cuts

Virgin Australia has been forced to make more cuts to its network in the face of high jet fuel prices and falling demand, ADAM BISHOP reports.

In a network update, the Aussie carrier confirmed two planned services to Tasmania have been scrapped as part of the recalibration, including its mooted Adelaide to Hobart and Perth to Launceston routes.

Both services were scheduled to take off in October this year.

In bad news for central Australia, VA has made the call to indefinitely pause its services to Uluru from Brisbane and Melbourne, effective 24 and 25 October respectively.

VA has also pulled the pin on its Brisbane-Apia route, which will be suspended from 25 August.

The changes equate to roughly 26 flights a week, and add to previous network cuts announced by the airline earlier this year.

“We recognise these changes will impact some guests [and] all customers affected by schedule changes will be contacted directly and offered a range of options, including alternate Virgin Australia flights, a travel credit or a refund,” the carrier said.

“We continue to proactively optimise our network to ensure it is focused on routes with the strongest demand and long-term commercial sustainability, while continuing to support key leisure and regional markets.”
