Rhine reaches new low

Low water levels in the Rhine River are endangering cruise departures.

UNIWORLD Boutique River Cruise Collection was recently forced to deviate two Rhine voyages, as low water levels risk the river effectively closing.

A spokesperson for Uniworld told travelBulletin the cruise line is thus far lucky to have not been affected further, as the Rhine’s level is impacted by record temperatures across Europe.

It is feared water levels on the Rhine are set to fall perilously close to the point at which the river would effectively close; however, a small amount of rain arriving recently has provided modest aid to the situation.

Water levels in some key sections of the Rhine on which Scenic Group’s brands operate has the company preparing to adjust guest travel arrangements when required and altering some river cruises “to allow for the safe navigation of our ships”, it told travelBulletin.

“Our team is committed to finding the best possible solution for each individual cruise…to ensure the minimal disruption to our guests’ experience and itineraries,” Scenic said.

“We will always do our utmost to deliver the best experience for our guests.” Scenic Group is also reminding guests its complimentary River Cruise Cover is included in all Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours & Emerald Cruises bookings, as an added assurance.

A key waypoint for the Rhine at Kaub in Germany has dropped to its lowest water level since 2018.
