FROM 28 June, Rex will fly five days per week between the two cities, marking the airline’s 11th domestic service.
Rex General Manager Network Strategy, Warrick Lodge, said the new Boeing 737 service will add nearly 90,000 seats to one of Australia’s busiest routes.
“When more airlines compete on a particular route, consumers benefit and our record in the domestic markets speaks for itself – Rex delivers terrific value for money,” he explained.
“Rex consistently outshines its domestic rivals in on-time performance and cancellation rates, and when travellers are booking a route of this distance and duration, reliability is paramount.
“Our competitors cancelled 57 flights in total on this route in the first four months of 2024, while their combined on-time arrival and departure performance was only around 72 percent.”
The service is set to be a success, with Flight Centre Corporate seeing a jump of more than 8% in the number of bookings made between Melbourne and Perth across the first four months of this year, compared to the same time period last year.
The company has also recorded a rise of 12.5% in the number of business travellers between the two cities, with the finance and insurance industries seeing the biggest leap of 28% year-on-year.
Fares for Rex’s new route are on sale now from as low as $299 economy and $999 business for travel from 28 June onwards, with checked baggage and refreshments included.
Rex also revealed it plans to announce another new domestic route in the coming days. The chances of the airline introducing a Sydney to Perth route, however, are slim, given the lack of available slots. TravelBulletin has contacted Rex for comment.
