Myrmell exits Australia

Well-known cruise and travel executive has departed Journey Beyond to take on new role, writes ADAM BISHOP.

Sture Myrmell (pictured) will become the new president of Saudi Arabian line Aroya Cruises.

Relocating from Australia to be based in Jeddah, Myrmell will be charged with managing the recently founded company’s strategic direction and growth plan as it looks to break new ground as being the only Saudi cruise brand to authentically reflect local culture.

Backed by Saudi Arabia as part of a broader push to position the country as a premier global tourism hub, the line had been working to expand itineraries in Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.

“Sture brings exceptional global cruise experience and a strong track record of leadership across some of the industry’s most recognised brands,” said Lars Clasen, CEO of Cruise Saudi.

However, Myrmell is joining the cruise line at a turbulent time, with many of the markets Aroya serves caught up in the current military conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States.

One saving grace may be Aroya’s recent expansion from the Persian Gulf into the Mediterranean last year.

Myrmell boasts an impressive resume in the cruise sector, which includes being the president of Carnival Australia for close to five years from 2017 to 2021.
