First Ritz-Carlton Lodge in the world to open in Australia

Emirates will partner with Ritz-Carlton to reopen the six-star New South Wales resort, which has been closed since 2023.

Emirates and Marriott International announced today that they are partnering to launch the new Emirates Wolgan Valley, a Ritz-Carlton Lodge, set to open later this year.

Located in the heart of the Blue Mountains, the resort is set to be the first of its kind in the world, featuring 40 elegantly appointed villas, each with a private pool and bespoke amenities.

The airline is investing $50 million in renovations, working in consultation with the hotel group to transform the property, which the airline first opened in 2009.

“To ensure Wolgan Valley’s next chapter meets the highest global standards while remaining true to its environment and its community, we knew this needed the right partner – a partner with global reach, and a partner who shares our vision of luxury that is rooted in place and purpose,” Emirates’ divisional vice president of Australasia Barry Brown told attendees at an exclusive event at the Sydney Opera House today.

The Emirates Wolgan Valley resort will be set on a 2,800-hectare conservancy most recently operated by One&Only Resorts –  the property has been closed for two-and-a-half years due to ongoing road access issues.

Once the resort reopens, guests will reach the property by helicopter, or a four-wheel drive service via the new Donkey Steps road.

“Demand for authentic authentic purpose led luxury experiences have never been stronger. Travellers are seeking space, meaning and a deeper connection to place,” Brown continued.

“Wolgan Valley is uniquely positioned to meet that demand and to strengthen Australia’s and New South Wales position on the global tourism stage.”

Design plans for the resort’s main homestead envision a welcoming arrival lounge and sitting room, a signature restaurant, a lounge bar and a wine room, Australian produce, and a curated collection of local and international wines.

Plans also include a signature sleep-out experience: a guided journey into remote wilderness under the Blue Mountains’ night sky, setting the stage for an evening meal outdoors and relaxation by a campfire.

Fully renovated recreational spaces will include an outdoor pool, tennis courts, equestrian stables, a modern fitness centre, and The Ritz-Carlton Spa.

At an event today, Marriott International VP APAC Rajeev Menon said that he is sure “there will be considerable interest” in opening more Ritz-Carlton lodges in Australia, with Wolgan Valley being what he hopes will be “the first of many”.
