italktravel celebrates 20th anniversary

italktravel and Cruise the Junction is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month, with a new office set to open, writes JO-ANNE HUI-MILLER.

The family-operated business is jointly owned by Karen, Julia and Mark van Huisstede.

“We live and breathe our business, but not a day has gone by where we feel it’s a chore and we are so grateful for that,” Julia van Huisstede told travel Bulletin.

Originally slated to open pre-COVID, the new office space will finally open in Mar and is located in the same Newcastle building it currently resides in.

“This new office will offer an elevated client experience, with the best of technology and systems to bring our clients a seamless and enjoyable booking process in an inspiring and welcoming environment,” said Julia van Huisstede.

First launched in 2006 as Harvey World Travel Maitland, the business has undergone plenty of change over the years, especially when it changed franchise groups and eventually consolidated during COVID to italktravel and Cruise the Junction.

“The biggest thank you goes to our clients – without their support, our business is not a success and we are truly grateful for the opportunity to be the ones that plan their dream holidays, manage business travel, create lifelong memories and open the world to them,” said Julia van Huisstede.

italktravel is also passionate about supporting the community through business networking groups, sports and charities, such as its platinum sponsorship of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, a relationship which has lasted 10 years thus far.

“We cherish this charity, its close to our hearts and does not discriminate who it helps, which is why we chose it so  many years ago,” said Julia van Huisstede. “Community means everything to us [and] this has been our mantra from the start – giving back where we can, ensuring everyone has an opportunity to thrive and grow.”

Lastly, Julia van Huisstede also offered some words of wisdom to other travel agents starting their own business: “Surround yourself with an excellent franchise or group (Express Travel Group has been wonderful for us) and work with stakeholders that know your business and can guide you – a good accountant, bank manager and solicitor – but importantly keep training, lean on your suppliers and reach out to other business owners for support – no one should feel alone.”
