Larger cruise ships will be eagerly looking at the NSW south coast town of Eden on the back of the NSW government green-lighting a proposal to extend the Eden Breakwater Wharf Extension.
Once implemented, the modified wharf will allow ships up to 370 metres in length to dock alongside, up from 325 metres. This will allow ships such as Princess Cruises’ Majestic Princess and Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas to visit.
Further changes will see the existing cap of 60 ship visits per season scrapped, which will also unlock the opportunity for ships to remain in port overnight.
The Sapphire Coast township and local businesses are gearing up for another strong cruise season beginning soon, with the 2024/25 season seeing Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wonder kick off another busy summer at the cruise wharf. It will be the first of 26 cruise ships booked for the season.
Last season was itself the largest seen for Eden, resulting in $19 million being pumped into the local economy.
NSW Transport Minister, Jo Haylen, said Eden was already the state’s largest regional cruise port and this investment would make it even better.
“Cruising is one of Eden’s biggest economic drivers, so allowing bigger international ships to sail will bring enormous benefits to the region for years to come,” Minister Haylen said.
“Investing in our regional ports is a no-brainer. We want people from all over the world to experience everything our stunning state has to offer and ensure we all reap the economic rewards.”
