ATIA demystifies RBA ban

A record number of travel advisors have joined the Association to discuss the impending surcharge ban.

THE Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) hosted a record-breaking webinar yesterday afternoon to address the RBA surcharge ban.

More than 700 travel professionals tuned into the session, which aimed to demystify the RBA changes, as well as provide tools to adopt once the ban is introduced from October.

Mint Payments chief executive officer Alex Teoh co-hosted the webinar, outlining the steps that the company has taken to support the industry and offering practical tips for agents.

“This is the largest webinar ATIA has ever delivered, and it underscores just how significant these changes are for our members,” ATIA chief executive officer Dean Long said.

“The level of engagement reflects the real concern across the industry and the need for clear, practical guidance.”

Teoh revealed that “over 95% of travel businesses currently rely on surcharging, so this is a significant and far-reaching change for the industry”.

“The biggest concerns we’re hearing are around the impact on margins, as well as the added complexity it creates in managing payment workflows and cost transparency,” he added.

Teoh advised travel businesses to prepare now by “working closely with their payment providers now to understand customer payment behaviours, explore lower-cost alternatives and implement the right pricing and operational strategies ahead of October.
