Excite: Coastal destinations the winners from
Jan-Feb Europe bookings boom

PREDICTIONS of a bumper year for travel to Europe appear to be vindicated by figures released this month by Excite Holidays.

The online Business to Business (B2B) wholesale travel provider has reported that agents have placed a whopping 72 per cent more new bookings to Europe in January and February 2013 compared to the first two months of last year.

A notable feature of the bookings surge is a trend towards seaside European destinations, outside of the major tourist destinations, according to a statement issued by the company.

Commenting on the increase, Excite Holidays chief executive George Papaioannou said: “The popular destinations like Paris, Rome, London and Madrid will still continue to be perennial favourites, but we are now seeing more agent enquiries and bookings for coastal European destinations, including Nice, Mykonos, Santorini, Dubrovnik, the Amalfi Coast, Neapolitan Riviera and Ibiza.”

Excite says increases recorded in January and February include a 53 per cent hike in bookings for Mykonos, a 66 per cent rise in bookings for Nice and 36 per cent growth in bookings for the Amalfi Coast compared to the same period in 2012.

Other European destinations experiencing a surge in interest from Australian agents include Barcelona (bookings up 50 per cent), Amsterdam (up 32 per cent) and Prague (up 40 per cent), according to Excite.

Papaioannou, whose company has a global inventory of over 200,000 hotels and apartments in over 150 countries, attributes the increase in sales, in part, to the ability for agents to book Greek Island ferry tickets, transfers, mini tours and activities in conjunction with accommodation bookings.
