I feel like I have ticked off some very special “bucket list” items with my recent famil to Lapland with 50 Degrees North and Finnair. What an amazing experience! We started in Levi, Finland’s largest ski resort, followed by a night time excursion to view the famous Northern Lights — how lucky we were to witness this incredible phenomenon. It was mind blowing to see the night sky dancing with colour ! We slept in a glass igloo ; did a horseback trek on Icelandic horses, and went to Santa Claus’ village and met Santa himself ! A highlight for me was a visit to the home and workshop of Ari & Irene, who are traditional Finnish Lappish artisans. They taught us how the traditional “Sami” people live off the land and use every part of the reindeer to make clothes, tools and artefacts and welcomed us in to their home for tea and cake which was home-baked using berries picked from the land surrounding their home. It completes any travel experience to meet the local people and see how they live ! I left with incredible friendships and memories I’ll never forget !
