AIR Canada (AC) has made travelling to New York from Australia a much more pleasant experience, with the carrier’s Vancouver hub providing the ideal place to transit en route to the Big Apple. YVR has been named the best airport in North America for ten years running — and offers full US customs and immigration clearance, without the need to collect and re-check baggage.

Increasing congestion and security requirements at airports such as Los Angeles and San Francisco often lead to missed onward flights, not to mention the stress of queuing for extended periods after enduring a trans-Pacific flight. The Air Canada solution is simple and elegant: incoming passengers on flights from Australia simply follow the “USA Connections” signage at Vancouver to a special in-transit facility. They proceed through pre-boarding screening and then a US Immigration Primary Inspection line — and then straight into the departure lounge where a wide array of shops and restaurants are available.

On the return it’s just as simple, with baggage checked in at New York’s Newark Liberty Airport travelling all the way through to the final destination in Australia. Air Canada’s business class product is also highly awarded, both on long-haul sectors between Australia and Canada, as well as within North America where AC is one of the few carriers offering lie-flat seating on a number of key domestic routes. The airline’s 777s have a herringbone 1-2-1 arrangement giving all business class passengers aisle access.
